What if Elon’s cozying up to extremists and un-virtue signaling to Republicans is really about expanding the right’s acceptance of electric cars?

Bear with me here. No question, this story is part crazy-bored-billionaire-without-self-control plus egomaniac douchebag. But Elon isn’t dumb.

In looking at his destructive and crazy actions since buying Twitter, we should contemplate what might be driving Elon besides pique and hubris. Maybe Elon thinks he’s figured out a way to expand the market for his electric cars.

Teslas are damned expensive vehicles. They are fancy, they are luxury, and they have a price tag to match. And they are mostly owned by members of the progressive left. Those that accept climate science. They are younger, and they are more affluent than the average.

Those that can afford a Tesla are already a tiny subset. Those progressive enough to want to buy electric cars that are more expensive than regular ones are an even smaller group. Tesla’s market is a pretty small subset of a subset.

But other wealthy people can afford Teslas. Many are skeptical of climate science and are not exactly progressive. Elon is after them now. By buying Twitter and triggering the libs, Elon is working to make Tesla attractive to those buyers.

I don’t know if this is really what he’s after. And, on the off chance that he is, I don’t know if it’ll work.
